Taiwanese DeviantART artist, Hai-Ning has created a spectacular depiction of the death of Superman. It is quite simply one of the best depictions of Superman that I have seen – even though he is:
1. Dead, and…
2. Apparently just a doodle. This is indeed how the artist describes it*
*Seriously, if this is just a doodle, imagine what she can do when she is putting ink to paper for reals.
The depth of colour is rich and textured, which when mixed with the in-the-moment style splashy nature, perfectly creates a sense of devastation. I particularly love how she works with shadows and light, as I think it gives the whole picture life (weirdly…and brilliantly, even though the character is dead).
Superman himself is a classic good looking specimen that has not been overly beefed up (which is fairly common in a lot of depictions) – though don’t get me wrong, the average human man could not look like that without a fair bit of working out.
There are two things that I particularly like about this artwork. The first is Superman’s half open eyes. They are glacial and cold and devoid of life. They are simple yet effective – they give an almost haunted feel to the picture. The second is how the cape seems to almost melt into the puddle of blood stretching out around him. This is a really nice touch and adds a bit of poetic beauty to the overall effect.

The artist, Hai-Ning has a really amazing and vast portfolio of work. Her characters all have a certain charm, and her art has a slightly addictive quality that makes you want to go over each piece again and again.
I salute such talent.
