It seems that in the past few years, moviegoers have been subject to an onslaught of superhero films. One of the latest to hit cinema screens worldwide is the latest update of the Superman franchise, Man of Steel. As some superhero movies have been held up as classics by critics and fans, it had a lot to live up to, especially with so many similar ones being made in recent times.
When it came to ticket sales, the opening weeks in the US, Canada and the UK were pretty successful for Man of Steel. It opened top of the box office lists on both sides of the Atlantic, while reviews weren’t too bad, although they paled into comparison with some other recent superhero film releases such as that of Iron Man 3.
Two out of three isn’t bad
While time will tell whether Man of Steel can be considered one of the best superhero films ever, fans revealed their favourite in a survey by Ladbrokes Games on all things superhero-related. The key finding was that the two greatest superhero films of all times from their perspective were The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight rises.
The original film was voted by 19% as the best film ever made in the genre. 18% said that they preferred the first sequel, while The Avengers came third in the poll, gaining a respectable 16% of votes. All three have been phenomenally successful in a variety of ways, especially the Dark Knight series, but why is this so?
Perhaps the main reason why the Dark Knight trilogy succeeded is that it changed the way in which superhero movies were made. Instead of using formulaic plots and over-the-top super-villains, they chose to give Batman a new dimension, something which helped to wow audiences and change the way in which superheroes were approached by studios.
