‘Greed is Everywhere’, and this Danish fiscal crime thriller spends all 10 of its episodes compounding this point. Follow The Money (original title, Bedrag) is set in the high-class merciless world of big finance, and the business side of climate change. It follows police officer Mads (Thomas Bo Larsen) in his quest to prove that the energy firm, Energreen is dirty.
This may not at first glance be the most accessible story – it is not a compelling murder mystery or a typical crime procedural show – but it is worth giving a go.
Admittedly the series has a bit of a slow start, but it soon warms up with plenty of tense moments, and cliff hangers that will lead to a need to binge watch all 10 episodes as quickly as possible.
The story of the show is multi-layered with plenty of twists and turns. However, though it does keep you guessing – it never goes over the top. And because the writing is so tight at no point are you left questioning the continuity or if the story makes sense.
The cast give some brilliantly subtle yet intense performances. In particular, Natalie Madueno is fantastic as Claudia. She manages to be both vulnerable and strong and because of this it’s easy to relate to her struggle with Energreen’s lies and her sincere need to try and make the right decisions to do the best for her son Bertram. Thomas Bo Larsen brings both humour and a certain gravitas to his role of Mads and he is simply put, a joy to watch. The character development is consistent and feels honest and the writing has a lot to do with that.
The score is a character all in itself. Tobias Wilner manages to increase tension and bring a whole new layer to the show through the power of music. Emphasising the cold imagery and emotions – this is a score that fits perfectly with the writing and the scenery.
Follow the Money is a compelling drama that deals with climate change, lies, money and blackmail. It is an enjoyable watch that will keep you guessing. It is not your typical crime thriller and that works in its favour.
We give Follow the Money 4 Nerds out of 5
