The Amazing Spiderman 2 has been super busy sorting out who they are going to cast in their darker grittier new Spidey film. Jamie Foxx has been confirmed as villain, Electro and Shailene Woodley has recently locked down the role of Mary-Jane Watson. The search however for Harry Osborn is still on.
Rumoured to be in the mix for consideration are Dane DeHaan (Chronicle), Alden Ehrenreich (from the upcoming Beautiful Creatures) and Brady Corbet (Melancholia) – but it is still early days – so the fact is, is that there may be plenty more actors in contention.
Out of the above choices, I would def go for Dane DeHaan, as I think Chronicle was pretty good proof that he could pull off a dark and edgy character and if indeed Amazing Spiderman 2 is going for a darker and more edgy feel then this I think would be a good fit. But who else is out there that could or should be in contention?
5 Stars Who Could Play Harry Osborn (in NLY’s humble opinion of course and in no particular order)
There is something dark and moody about Nicholas Hoult and not just because he played one of the leads in UK acclaimed series Skins. He has a kind of ‘Wes Bentley-esque’ air about him and I don’t think it would be too much of a stretch to imagine him in this role. He has more than proved his acting chops in films like The Single Man and he has proved that he can handle the pressure of being in a big franchise film (X-Men: First Class).
Not just another sparkly vampire. I first saw Jackson Rathbone in an episode of Criminal Minds where he played a serial killer with dissociative personality disorder and ever since then I have wanted to see him in a role which he can really sink his teeth into. The Twilight Saga doesn’t quite cut it as far as I am concerned as he barely has anything to do, other than look in pain and hang with Alice. I think he could master the look and personality of Harry with no problem and really this would just be a great excuse to see what he can really do.
Yelchin is a bit of a chameleon. He can play comedy (dare I say it…The Smurfs), horror (Fright Night), drama (Memoirs of a Teenage Insomniac), indie (Charlie Bartlett), big budget (Star Trek) and action (Terminator Salvation). He absorbs completely who the character is and then becomes them. I think he is a very talented young actor and I also think that with this choice, Harry Osborn could be whoever the director wants him to be.
Aaron Taylor Johnson
In roles such as Kick-Ass, Nowhere Boy and Savages, Aaron Taylor Johnson has proved that he can tackle pretty much any type of role put in front of him. He has the kind of charisma that means you can’t take your eyes off him (which, is probably why he made such a great John Lennon in Nowhere Boy). He would be able to portray Harry Osborn as both moody and charming and he would bring a certain intensity to the role that would give what can sometimes be played as a bit of a wishy-washy character a real depth that would make him truly compelling.
Okay, so this choice is not so serious, as honestly, I think that Czuchry is probably a bit too old for the role – though that being said, he does look very young for his age. Czuchry is excellent at playing characters who come from wealthy backgrounds, he has the conflicting emotions of self-entitlement, sensitivity, wallowing moodiness and sincerity down to a fine art. He is also super charming. Which to me could all be channelled perfectly into the character. Some of his acting highlights include The Good Wife, Gilmore Girls and Friday Night Lights. Though he has not really broken into film (he has had a few roles but without much fanfare) it would be nice to see him get a chance in something a bit more high profile. Though I know this will probably not happen (at least in this film) as he is a bit too old for the role.
